MoM is a museum of motion where exhibits a diversity of MoCap data into the mixed reality experience.
The development of body tracking technology enables a variety of industries to produce more high fidelity products whether it is a movie, game, robotics, or even medical devices. However, the backend of the products is unfamiliar, hard to understand how the technology looks and feels like. This experimental museum aims to bridge the gap between the audiences and the unfamiliar technologies and to create moments that stimulate ideas about how emerging technologies can be utilized through the media of mixed reality.
Final Demo
Where we started
First few weeks of exploration was to familiarize our selves with the technology by producing our own motion capture data. Our direction of the idea was to answer this question “Where can we apply it?”
“How can we create more opportunities?”
Exhibition Theme: “Greetings”
what if we showcase the welcoming motions so that players could approach the exhibition more friendly?
Museum Prototype v1
Our idea is to use both physical and digital environment to showcase the motion capture data. First, there is a physical environment where multiple VR play areas are set up. Second, there is a virtual museum where players can experience the exhibition in the virtual environment. To be more specific, the players become a part of the exhibition in the physical environment as a motion performer while exploring in the virtual exhibition. Therefore, players become a live motion demonstration for audiences in the physical museum and create a multi-dimensional exhibition.
VR Prototype v1
We made a prototype of a virtual environment where players can interact with the motion capture data played on a bot. Our attempt was to encourage players to respond to the movement of the bot.
Museum Prototype v2
We thought about how the virtual exhibition would look like. We designed a virtual space just like a physical exhibition environment, however, the available space for moving in a VR playing environment is very limited. We figured out that it is difficult to walk in a traditional style of the museum in VR.
Museum Prototype v3
Our solution for the physical space was to use the advantage of the virtual environment. We designed a simple UI to navigate through the motion data in the virtual environment. The motion bots will be played when it is placed in front of the player. With this prototype, we could imagine an exhibition of endless motions in line.
